Mostly played by just using the hands its shape produces a hard to resist deep tone or bass sound. Found all over West Africa the djembe is among the most popular of all the African instruments. |

The classical guitar is looked on by fans of other styles of guitar playing as technically advanced but a little starchy. Of course, to use the guitar to faithfully interpret works written for the piano or violin does need a formidable technique. Most classical guitarist students would be looking ahead a year or two to the time they could call themselves fully fledged guitarists.
The pioneer of classical guitar is Andres Segovia. His first guitar tuition was rooted in the tradition of flamenco even though he was never really interested in flamenco as material for his guitar playing. His interest in the contemporary music of Spain and in the works of J. S. Bach helped shape the repertoire of the classical guitarists who followed in his footsteps. |

One of the most breathtakingly impressive styles of guitar is the rock of the late sixties and early seventies. The era of the riff-heavy songs where the lyrics seemed to be just an excuse to make up another riff. So, as a result, lots of guys who hear music from this era want to take riff guitar lessons. That's it, nothing else, just the riffs. This is just one step above air guitar, but a step just the same.
A riff is a sequence of notes or chords that is repeated many times throughout a song. The guitar riff is a modern musical phenomenon although riffs have always been used in jazz and blues. In rock guitar a riff may contain very few notes but those notes usually make up a catchy combination of rhythm and tune that sticks in the memory of all who hear it. A riff can also contain a rhythm with no melody as in Ravel's Bolero or in any number of classical pieces that make use of the fandango rhythm.
